The Covid 19 scavenger

The government should walk the talk in the fight against covid-19. The current covid-19 pandemic has no doubt disrupted many lives of Kenyans. Lives and jobs have been lost and social life restricted through curfew and even ban on social gatherings such as weddings and parties. In fighting covid-19 pandemic, the government has spent millions of shillings on treatment, vaccination and cushioning Kenyans from recession through tax waiver and stipends.

While we laud the government's effort in fighting covid-19, the upsurge in political meetings being witnessed in the country is a worrying trend, given that many people show up and some fail to observe the Covid-19 rules and protocols. For instance, the recent incident in Voi town, Taita Taveta county where a political rally was held by various politicians and the fact that the Covid-19 rules and protocols such as maintaining social distance and wearing of face masks not being observed is a sign that all is not well. This situation therefore placed the lives of many Kenyans at risk due to the continuous trail of infections and deaths.

Many leaders, who are much aware that social gatherings have been banned in Kenya, tour different counties with an aim of launching projects or popularising their stab at the presidency. These leaders hence attract mammoth crowds and thus leading to a stream of covid-19 infections. A high number of infections therefore results to many people being quarantined and many admitted to hospitals, given that there are few hospital beds in the country that can accommodate the infected people. Why are politicians above the law? In the fight against covid-19, no one is safe until all of us are safe. It's everyone's responsibility to ensure that they observe the Covid-19 rules and regulations to prevent loss of more lives. In the rallies being held, the politicians fail to wear face masks and this portrays them as a bad example to the rest.

Even though the government is trying to maintain the curfew and ensuring that social gatherings are attended by at least fifteen people, it's vividly seen that it has failed in terms of the issue of Kenyan leaders holding political rallies. Hence, the government should walk the talk in the fight against covid-19 and arraign in court the politicians who fluot covid-19 protocols. This way, the Corona virus infections will be prevented and the lives of Kenyans will not be at risk.
